Most of the CDO & Data Analytics leadership adverts you see online often read like a cry for help.

Reading between the lines the adverts say:

“Hey !  We don’t really know what we are looking for or how to define success in this role, but if we put a job ad out perhaps the market will show us the way?”

It’s unlikely.

Most ads tend to put off the best people because the success metrics tend to be so vague.

If an organisation doesn’t know what it’s looking for before putting the job ad out, the 200 + applications they are likely to receive won’t provide them any insights.

And then the whole exercise just turns into a colossal waste of time.

A better use of time and with much greater chance of long term success is to take some time upfront defining:

– What are the problems & business challenges that need solving
– how will success be measured
– what business metrics do you hope to affect and how

When you go through an exercise examining these specific questions it becomes easier to identify a  Talent Pool of executives whose competencies & experience will align with your Chief Data Officer job.

It will also help you develop a really clear narrative of the challenges you want that individual to tackle and some clear metrics on what success will look like.  The best executives will want a real clear understanding of the the success criteria to consider a role.
